I had 40 options… and still made the wrong choice

Beloved Architect of Identity,

There’s a moment I still think about from a road trip in Portugal.

The trip was amazing, but this particular moment showed me something I kept repeating in my life and business.

We had just arrived in Aveiro. A small coastal city people call the “Venice of Portugal.”

Colorful boats. Quiet canals. Art deco buildings that felt both old and alive. It surprised me in the best way.

We didn’t have time to see everything. But that felt okay. A reason to come back.

It was still early. So we walked into a pastry shop. And that’s where things shifted.

The counter was long. Really long. Easily 35 to 40 pastries.

Different shapes and fillings. Different everything. Plus cakes and drinks. Plus, people behind us waiting to order.

I froze because, let’s be honest, I wanted everything. I stood there trying to make the “right” choice. Comparing. Guessing. Second-guessing. Feeling the pressure of time. And the pressure of the line behind me.

Eventually, I ordered. More than I needed. More than I could actually enjoy.

At first, it felt great. Sweet. Exciting. Like I had made the most of the moment.

Then it hit me. The sugar rush. The lightheadedness. That strange, restless feeling in your body. Everything moving a little too fast.

I had to sit down. Stop. Wait for it to pass.

And right there, in that small pastry shop, I realized something.

What happened was not only food-related. It can be done with everything.

More ideas, offers, strategies, options, and work.

I used to believe that more meant better. More meant smarter. More meant I was “doing enough.”

But more often than not, more just means overwhelmed.

Years ago, I read The Paradox of Choice. And it came rushing back in that moment.

The idea is simple but uncomfortable.

The more choices you have, the harder it becomes to choose. And the less satisfied you feel after.

Because now you’re not just choosing. You’re comparing every possible alternative you didn’t choose.

That’s where most people get stuck. Trying to maximize. Trying to pick the best option.

But here’s the shift to consider:

Stop trying to maximize. Start learning how to decide.

There’s a difference.

Maximizers chase the perfect option. They keep searching. Keep adding. Keep second-guessing. And somehow… still feel behind.

Satisficers do something quieter. They define what matters. They choose based on that. And then they move.

That day in Aveiro didn’t just teach me about pastries. It showed me how I was approaching my work, content, business, and even my time.

Too many inputs. Not enough direction.

Now I ask a different question: “What actually moves the needle here?”

Not: “What else could I add?”

That one shift has led me to noticeable progress in many areas.

Until next time, keep blooming,

Ruth

Reflect

  1. Where in your life are you adding more… instead of choosing better?
  2. What decision are you avoiding by staying in “research mode”?

Reframe

Old belief: “More options = more freedom.”
New belief: “Clear criteria = real freedom.”

Old belief: “I need to find the best option.”
New belief: “I need to choose what works, and move.”

Actionable Transformation

  1. Define your criteria: Before you choose anything, decide what matters most (time, energy, ROI, alignment).
  2. Limit your options: Give yourself 2–3 choices max. Anything beyond that is noise.
  3. Decide → move → evaluate. Not decide → doubt → restart.
